Hank Jones began his recording career on RCA Victor Records with his life-long friend Dean Kay as part of the singing team of "Hank & Dean." They were signed to the label by Steve Sholes, Elvis Presley's A&R man, and produced by Neely Plumb, who recorded the Limeliters and was responsible for the "Sound of Music" movie soundtrack. Dean went on to run Lawrence Welk's publishing company for twenty years and wrote Frank Sinatra's mega-hit, "That's Life." He now is on the National Board of Directors of ASCAP. |
Among the several singles released by Hank & Dean on RCA was "Old Devil Moon," which they performed on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand" TV show. Besides a full orchestra, among the musicians who backed them up on their records were Leon Russell, James Burton, Ernie Freeman, Glen Campbell, Hal Blaine, Barney Kessel, and Darlene Love and the Blossoms. |
Hank & Dean's album on RCA Victor was entitled "Arrival Time." Several songs on the album were written by Hank, Dean, and their co-writer Larry Ray. In Peter Levinson's new book on the great Fred Astaire called "Puttin' On The Ritz," it is revealed that among the only few musical recording artists that Mr. A. really liked to listen to in the 60s were Hank Jones and Dean Kay. Quite a compliment from The Master! |
In between films, Hank continued to write music. Hank was greatly honored when the great Mel Tormé chose to record his tune "Midnight Swinger" on one of his Capitol albums. , |
In his early Hollywood days, Hank was thrilled to have known the talented Ira Gershwin. Ira's letters about the Gershwin brothers' early days in the music business inspired Hank not to be discouraged and to keep on writing! |
Hank has recently released four CD's on the EpitoméRecords label. These CD's contain Hank's favorite songs. Hank made these recordings between 1997 and 2003. Click on the individual CD above for more information. |
